Malta's stunning heritage and compact size makes it the perfect place for a fulfilling city break, says Graham Soult

To many UK holidaymakers, Malta's main attractions are its lively resorts, turquoise bays and sandy beaches. However, go beyond the package holiday hotspots, and you'll find that there's much more to commend this unique and beautiful Mediterranean country.

Together, the three main islands that comprise the Republic of Malta - Gozo, Comino, and Malta itself - occupy just 316 sq km, making the country smaller in size than the Isle of Wight. Yet within this small area are no fewer than three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the tiny capital, Valletta. Covering just 55 hectares, yet housing 320 historic monuments, it's little surprise that Valletta has been described as one of the most concentrated historic areas in the world.

With a wide range of hotels to choose from - many with stunning views over the city - Valletta's the perfect base for a short break. Don't miss the breathtaking panorama of the Three Cities and Grand Harbour from the Upper Barrakka Gardens, above, or the tucked away Hastings Gardens, a green oasis with lovely views towards Manoel Island and Msida Creek.

From Valletta, attractions further afield are readily accessible using Malta's cheap and extensive bus network. Highlights for heritage-lovers include the ancient walled city of Mdina, its narrow streets lined with extraordinary palaces, and the city of Vittoriosa, its architectural riches complemented by a modern and lively marina area.

If you fancy the full Malta experience, then it's easy to combine a city-based culture fix with Malta's more traditional resort appeal. For example, travellers to Malta can find plenty of unique timeshares to stay at, many of which are located right on the gorgeous beaches. Malta timeshares are known for their spacious, luxurious accommodation and fun, safe atmosphere, making them one of the most popular choices when visiting this beautiful and interesting country.
