Pack wisely for winter hiking

Winter travel can be just as fun as heading off in the summer. The important thing to remember is to make sure you pack the right gear, as there's nothing worse than being cold on a trip.

If you're planning to go hiking when on your travels, then you'll need the proper clothing. It's no good setting off in a t-shirt, jumper and jeans, as if you get stuck or lost, this kind of clothing won't provide you with proper protection from the elements. It's far easier than people imagine to contract hypothermia from exposure to the cold, and rescue services are constantly sending out messages about how many problems are caused by people who head out hiking unprepared.

First, you need baselayers for your upper body and legs. These garments are made of high-tech material that allows your skin to breathe while still fitting close to your body to protect your core body warmth.

Next you need middle layers for insulation - often microfleece garments are good as middle layers. Sometimes it's better to wear two thinner garments rather than one heavier one. That way, you can remove just one of the insulating layers when you pick up the pace and start to get too warm.

Over the top, you'll need a waterproof jacket and possibly trousers as well. These protect you from getting cold and wet if it's rainy or windy. Go to a Regatta outlet and you'll get everything you need for your trip in one place.

Finally, think about footwear. It can be a pain carrying an extra pair of shoes on your trip, so why not leave your trainers behind and get yourself a pair of walking trainers instead. These will serve you equally well around town as in the hills, whereas normal trainers are no good for hiking.
