Camping in Brittany

If you love seafood and fantastic beaches without the crowds and searing heat of the southern parts of France, Brittany ticks the box.

If you are not on a tight budget then there is a great variety of hotels in the region, with the Relais and Chateaux hotels being able to offer the best in luxury and great cooking. For those of us hit by the recession, however, who are having to watch the euros (and sadly you don't get as many of these for your sterling as you used to) a holiday in a tent can be the answer to your prayers. If you watch out for good offers at a tent sale towards the end of the season, you should be able to grab a bargain for just a few pounds.

Now, Brittany cannot promise wall to wall sunshine - in fact, the climate is similar to that of Cornwall - so make sure that you pack the waterproofs and look for a campsite and local area with plenty to keep you happy if it rains.

Brittany is an extremely popular camping destination and many of the sites are close to interesting towns such as Concarneau, Quimper and Carnac with plenty to occupy the sightseer. However, if you have kids who turn up their noses at anything vaguely cultural look for a site that has an indoor games room with facilities such as pool, table football and table tennis. If you are lucky the site might also have an indoor pool or alternatively the local town might have a leisure centre. Bear in mind that many public swimming pools in France demand the donning of tight trunks of the Speedo variety! Swimming caps might also be the order of the day.

Brittany is a popular destination for groups of French teenagers so if you have an issue with noise it is worth enquiring whether large groups are allowed on the site where you are thinking of booking.
